While academia often focuses on theoretical foundations, the industry increasingly requires applied competencies such as AI deployment, interdisciplinary knowledge, and real-world problem integration. Studies across Europe highlight that AI talent demand has more than doubled in recent years, intensifying competition for skilled professionals and exposing shortages in key digital roles.

At the same time, policymakers warn that persistent skills gaps in strategic sectors like ICT and AI are already affecting innovation and long-term investment, with many companies identifying talent shortages as a major barrier to growth. If this gap continues to widen, Europe risks slowing its technological progress, losing talent to other regions, and graduating students who are less prepared for real-world AI challenges making alignment between education and industry not just beneficial, but essential.
